Nicole Ari Parker was born in New York City. She is an American stage and film actor. Her most famous role is as Teri, the passionate attorney Teri Jospehson, on the Showtime television series Soul Food. The actress is known under her maiden name of Nikki Kodjoe. Born and raised in Baltimore Maryland. When she was an infant, she showed an aptitude for acting. She was awarded the Best Actress Award at an Maryland High School competition. She received her degree in acting at New York University after working in the Washington Ballet Company' as well as in theatre. The first role she played in The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love was a success and earned her immense respect. Born to Mumbai, India and raised in Nigeria from 7 years old, Contractor was well-versed in world travels and a variety of cultures at a very young age. When she was seven through nine, she attended boarding schools in London. The family later moved to Toronto where she lived for most of her childhood. Contractor had a great academic career throughout her time in Toronto while also training as ballerina. She was a student at the Etobicoke School of the Arts, a high school for the arts that was specifically designed to be a school where she was able to study not only dance, but also drama. Contractor was 16 when she realized that performing would be her career. She had danced for a decade. When she completed her high school education, she was awarded an entire scholarship to University of Toronto. At the University of Toronto she completed the Master of Arts in Theatre. She also double majored with Psychology and Sociology. Contractor attended the highly-regarded Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada, for Pericles. After one full year of auditions, she was offered the lead part. In 2002, Canadian critics praised her performance in 92 productions of the play. She accepted the invitation to join Stratford's conservatory, a program which allows just four men and eight women are able to take a 20 weeks crash training in classical theater. Contractor's place in the following production was secured, and she was chosen of Hermia.
